Mamave ingredients explained: what is in the range and what is left out

Created by Coolkidz Australia

Mamave formulas are developed by a cosmetic chemist and made in small batches in Australia. Here is what goes in, what stays out, and how to check a product suits your skin.

What Mamave leaves out

  • No retinoids.
  • No parabens.
  • No artificial or synthetic fragrance.
  • No synthetic colours.
  • No petrochemicals or mineral oils.
  • No almond or peanut oils.
  • SLS and SLES free.
  • Vegan and cruelty free.

Mamave's preservative system is benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid, which it describes as free from parabens, isothiazolinones and formaldehyde.

Key ingredients you will see

  • GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid): a fatty acid found in plant oils such as borage seed and evening primrose, used across the range to help support the skin barrier and relieve dryness.
  • Squalane: a lightweight emollient similar to the skin's natural oils, in both moisturisers.
  • Zinc oxide: forms a protective barrier on the skin, in Bubba's Barrier Cream.
  • Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2: a plant derived alternative to lanolin.
  • Rice bran wax: a vegan alternative to beeswax.
  • Sodium coco sulphate: a mild, coconut derived cleanser in Bubba's Wash.

Mamave's Ingredients Glossary explains every ingredient in its formulas from A to Z.

How each product is scented

  • Mumma's Oil, Moisturiser, Scrub, Soak: Lavender and frankincense essential oils
  • Bubba's Moisturiser and Massage Oil: Lavender and ylang ylang essential oils
  • Bubba's Wash: Naturally derived mandarin essential oil
  • Bubba's Barrier Cream: Fragrance free

Allergies and patch testing

The range is free from almond and peanut oils, but some products contain other plant oils. For example, Bubba's Massage Oil and Bubba's Barrier Cream contain apricot kernel oil, and Mumma's Scrub contains soya bean oil. Full ingredient lists are on each product page.

As with any skincare, Mamave recommends a patch test first. If you or your baby have a diagnosed skin condition, or you are unsure about using a product in pregnancy, check with your GP, midwife or pharmacist.
