Most problems with a Magic nappy bin come down to how the top, the seal or the bag is being used. Work through the issue that matches yours below. For bag checks and cleaning steps, see our guide Cleaning and odour tips for your Magic nappy bin.

The top will not open when the bag is full
This is not a fault. The top is designed to stay locked until you release it.
- Press the small release button on the side of the bin.
- Carefully lift the top section off together with the bag.
- Twist the bag a few times to seal it.
- On a Heka or Thoth, tie the bag and lift it out. On a Majestic, tear it from the holder.
- Fit a new bag and put the top back on until it clicks.
Odour escapes straight after a change
- Turn the top all the way. A lid that is rested shut but not turned will not engage the wave seal, so odour escapes instead of staying in the chamber below.
- On the Heka and Thoth, always bring the top back to its resting position after each change.
- On the Majestic, turn the handle forward and back, then leave it in stand-by with the cup open, not with the rounded side facing up.
The bag splits or will not seal
Thin, flimsy bags can stretch or fail to seal properly around the drum. Switch to a better quality bin liner or a Magic bin bag, and check each bag for holes before fitting it. Make sure the top of the bag is tucked under the rim so the seal can close over it.
The bin fills faster than expected
- Nappy counts are approximate and based on newborn and infant sizing, so the bin holds fewer nappies as your baby grows.
- On a Heka or Thoth, twist the base to extend the bin and give it more room.
- The Majestic is fixed height and does not extend.
Watch it done
The Magic video guides page shows each bin in real use, including how to use the Heka and Thoth telescopic bins, a Heka M tutorial covering loading, sealing and emptying, and the Majestic in action.
Still noticing a smell?
A full hand wash of the top and drum usually fixes a lingering smell. The steps are in our guide Cleaning and odour tips for your Magic nappy bin. Never put any part of the bin in the dishwasher.
