Changing modes on your smarTrike as your child grows

Created by Coolkidz Australia

Your smarTrike stroller trike is built to change with your child. The Wind and Wonder ranges both move through the same four modes, and you do not need tools for any of the changes. Each change can be reversed just as quickly.

The four modes

  1. Stroller mode, from 6 months (Wonder max only). The seat is reclined, the harness is on, the canopy is up and the child handlebar is locked. You steer from the parent handle. The Wonder max is the only model suitable under 10 months, because its seat reclines to 140 degrees.
  2. Trike mode, from about 10 months. Sit the seat upright and unlock the child handlebar. Your child holds on while you keep steering.
  3. Training mode, from about 18 months. Clip the pedals on and fold the canopy away or take it off. Leave the parent handle attached so you can guide and take over when little legs get tired.
  4. Free riding, from about 2 years. Release the parent handle, lift it off and stow the harness. The handle clicks back on if your child needs a push home.

Knowing when to move on

The ages are a guide only, and every child gets there at their own pace. Most toddlers start pushing the pedals between 18 months and 2 years, often one foot at a time or backwards at first. Steady pedalling usually comes between 2 and 3 years. Around ten minutes is a good practice session.

If your child gets frustrated or wants to hop off after a minute, they may not be ready for pedals yet. Go back a mode for a few weeks and try again later.

Move to free riding only once your child can pedal and brake on purpose. Until then, keep a hand on the parent handle.

Handy to know

  • The pedals are detachable. Keep them in the seat pocket when they are not in use.
  • Your smarTrike folds in every mode, including with the pedals on.
