Frida Baby MediFrida: how to give medicine and clean the dispenser

Created by Coolkidz Australia

The MediFrida is a medicine dispenser shaped like a dummy. Your baby sucks as they would on a dummy while you press the syringe, so the medicine goes to the inside of the cheek rather than the back of the throat.

What is in the box

  • One MediFrida dummy dispenser.
  • One dosing syringe.
  • One 5 ml measuring cup.

How to give a dose

  1. Confirm the dose with your pharmacist or GP before you start.
  2. Draw the dose into the supplied syringe, or any standard oral syringe, and check the markings twice.
  3. Push the syringe into the side channel of the dummy with a slight twist until it sits firmly.
  4. Offer the dummy as you normally would. Once your baby is sucking, press the plunger slowly.
  5. Keep the dummy in for a few more sucks, then remove the syringe and close the tab. The MediFrida then works as an ordinary dummy while your baby settles.

Getting the full dose

About 0.2 ml of medicine can stay inside the dummy channel after dosing. For doses over 1 ml that is a small share. For very small doses, under 1 ml, such as vitamin D drops, ask your pharmacist how to load the syringe to allow for it.

  • It suits liquid medicines given by oral syringe, such as children's paracetamol and ibuprofen, liquid antibiotics, vitamin drops and gripe water.
  • Thick suspensions are not suitable, as they can block the channel.
  • If your baby will not take it, an oral syringe aimed at the inside of the cheek does the same job.

Cleaning

  • Take it apart straight after use and rinse in warm water.
  • The dummy and the syringe are both top-rack dishwasher safe.
  • Never leave medicine to dry in the channel.

Age and dosing

The MediFrida can be used from birth, but dose accuracy matters most for newborns, so check with your pharmacist before the first use. It is not recommended for children over three. It is a delivery tool, not a medicine: the dose, the timing and whether to give medicine at all are for your pharmacist or GP to advise.
